A Merseyside family’s dream holiday in Mexico became a nightmare after an 83-year-old great-gran was rushed to hospital after suffering a stroke.
Mary Silker, 83, from Orrell Park, was in Cancun with husband Christopher, 79, his niece Susan Allen and Susan’s partner Keith Higham when she fell ill.
Luckily both Ms Allen and Mr Higham are qualified carers and spotted the signs of a stroke quickly.
She was rushed to hospital leaving her worried family fearing what might happen.
Not only where they desperately worried about Mrs Silker’s health – they were concerned about the hospital bills they would face.
As Mrs Silker began undergoing tests the hospital told Mr Silker he needed to pay £6,000.
Mr Higham, 52, said, “It was quite frightening. She couldn’t talk properly and she was having difficulty with her hands. It’s just quite scary not knowing what to do. It’s quite difficult when you have people who don’t speak English very well.”
The family called their holiday insurance company – and daughter Paula McLoughlin, 56, today said their experience proves how important it is to have insurance.
She said, “I think the total cost was £45,000. We were all worried sick – it was an awful, awful time.”
The insurance company moved Mrs Silker to a private hospital and paid for physiotherapy and treatment for two weeks.
They also covered the cost of first class flights back to the UK for Mr and Mrs Silker and a doctor and nurse who had been flown out to care for them.
After flying back last Monday Mrs Silker is now recovering at home, and her family say she’s slowly getting better, although her speech hasn’t yet fully returned.
Mrs McLoughlin said, “They sent her to the best hospital, the actual room was as big as a house. They travelled home with her with oxygen, and even last night they were ringing us and saying ‘did she have a safe journey? How is she?’ They’ve been absolutely amazing.”
