What type of car insurance do you need?
The best car insurance for you is a policy that covers your requirements. You will need third party cover as a minimum as this is a compulsory legal requirement to be able to drive. There are several types of car insurance you can choose from.
The minimum level of car insurance required under UK law, intended to protect other drivers when you take to the roads. The third party insurance covers only the cost of damage or injury to the other vehicle if you’re involved in an accident and you were at fault.
Third party, fire and theft (TPFT)
Third party, fire and theft is similar to third party insurance and will also pay out in the event your car is stolen or involved in a fire.
Comprehensive is the most complete level of cover a driver can get in the UK. It includes everything that’s covered by TPFT (Third Party, Fire and Theft) and will also include the cost of damages to your own car, even if you’re at fault. This type of insurance will also pay out if you’re involved in an accident with a driver without insurance, which is not usually included by lower types of cover.
What are the benefits of comprehensive cover?
Car comprehensive cover provides more protection than lower levels of insurance. The higher premiums will reflect that the insurer is covering a wider number of risks.
Some insurance companies will factor that riskier drivers usually buy less comprehensive cover because they think it is cheaper. This creates a higher risk of a claims on the lower types of car insurance such as third party or TPFT policies.
That’s why it’s a good idea to compare quotes for fully comprehensive car insurance even if you’re planning initally a lower type of cover.
