What should a Travel Insurance policy for Portugal cover?
To ensure that you buy comprehensive cover, look for a policy that includes:
Emergency medical expenses – To ensure this remains valid on you policy, you must declare all pre-existing medical conditions.
Repatriation to the UK – The only way to cover yourself for medical transport back to the UK. Without travel insurance, Repatriation from south Europe could cost you £16,000.
Cancellation and curtailment – cover for cancellation costs before you go or cutting short your trip while you’re away.
Baggage and personal property – covering your personal property should they get lost, damaged or stolen while you’re away. If you wish to extend this cover for items such as phones, cameras and ipads, consider adding Gadget cover to your policy as an optional extra.

- Check any entry requirements and quarantine requirements for your chosen destination
- Choose a Travel Insurance policy that includes Covid-19 Cover

Travelling to Europe and GHIC: Is Travel Insurance still needed?
You may have previously had an EHIC card when travelling to destinations within the EU. EHIC cards can no longer be renewed. Instead, you will need to apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).
You cannot rely on the GHIC to cover the cost of medical claims when travelling abroad. Repatriation costs and other circumstances are not covered by GHIC. Therefore it’s essential that you have comprehensive cover too.
