Tips for travelling with Anxiety
Travelling is a liberating experience. It’s a good opportunity to say goodbye to the day to day stresses of life and work. If you live with anxiety, then it’s likely that this is even more important to you. You should do your best to be aware of the potential sources of stress of planning a holiday and of going abroad. With that in mind, we’ve put a list together to help you enjoy you’re holiday to the fullest.
Check with your doctor before travelling. This is obvious advice, but you should check that your doctor doesn’t have any reservations about your trip. They have the benefit of experience, and they know how other patients have reacted to the stresses of travel and holidaying in specific destinations.
Choose a suitable destination. Make sure that your destination appeals to you, and that you’ll get a chance to pursue your own interests. This is especially relevant if you are travelling with someone else – don’t let them dictate the itinerary. Instead, find a balance that both of you can enjoy. Frustration can cause stress and worry, which is counterproductive for anxiety sufferers.
Plan ahead. Arriving without a plan can be confusing and lead to stress. A good travel guide will help you to plan out your trip and make sure that you don’t miss out on anything you want to do or see.
Pick a good travelling companion. A calm, friendly travelling companion can be a source of strength and help to banish anxiety when you’re on holiday. On the other hand, a negative companion can help to conjure stress up from nowhere. So choose someone you will feel happy to spend time with
Listen to music. Sitting in silence during a flight leaves your mind with little to do but play the what-if game. Music can help you relax and unplug the brain for a bit. A book is a good idea too, although it does require a little more concentration.
