Will you be covered if you’re travelling during the COVID-19 pandemic?

There are three things to check so that you can make sure you're covered:

  • You must be fit to travel
  • The FCDO must NOT have advised against travel to your destination - check the FCDO travel advice
  • You must follow the local government advice for your destination, checking and following their guidelines and entry requirements

You can then be covered for emergency medical expenses and cancellation for a positive diagnosis of COVID-19, with AllClear travel insurance with enhanced Coronavirus cover. Existing policyholders should read our Frequently Asked Questions if your trip is affected by Covid-19.

Getting travel insurance for bladder cancer

Bladder cancer travel tips

If you’re planning on travelling with bladder cancer,  there will be a number of things you may want to consider before your trip. However, if you plan well in advance, you’ll have the best chance of having a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

Take a look at our bladder cancer travel tips for our suggestions on planning a trouble-free holiday.

Before anything else, you should take the time to think seriously about the kind of holiday that would work best for you. If you’ve always enjoyed action-packed weeks abroad, now might be the time to consider a more sedate experience.

Be realistic about what’s possible for you. If you’ve recently had treatment, for example, then you might be worried that you won’t feel 100% well for the duration of your holiday. In this case, be cautious and don’t overexert yourself.

Access to toilets

Certain treatments for bladder cancer can alter how frequently you need to use the toilet. Since your diagnosis, you may have found that you need to relieve your bladder fairly regularly.

To make things easier, you could book yourself an aisle seat on the plane. This will make it easier for you to get to the toilet and prevent the need to ask others to move every time you feel the urge!

Medication

If you’re on specific medication to help manage your bladder cancer, visit your doctor before you travel. Make them aware that you’ll need enough medication for the duration of your trip and maybe some extra in case of delays.

If you know you’ll need your medication during the flight, it’s important to let the airline know this before you fly. They may also offer any mobility assistance to ensure you don’t feel too fatigued.

Access to medical help

If you are travelling with bladder cancer, make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance and have declared all medical conditions. That way you’ll be covered for any emergency medical treatment you might need while you’re away.

If you’re travelling in Europe you should also have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This allows you the same level of medical treatment as the residents in the country you’re visiting, either free or at a lower cost, so always carry it in your purse or wallet. However,  you will still need travel insurance too as the EHIC wouldn’t cover you for all eventualities, for example repatriation (emergency transport back to the UK.

Other things to consider

As much as you might want to explore your new surroundings, make sure you rest frequently. Other travelling with bladder cancer tips include:

  • Take a list of foods you’ve been more sensitive to since your diagnosis. You can show this to hotel and restaurant staff so they can help you with suitable food choices. You might want to translate this list into the language of the country you’re travelling to.
  • Carry a bottle of water with you at all times and stay well hydrated.
  • If you’ve been diagnosed with bladder cancer, alcohol is generally not recommended. If you’re unsure about what’s safe, then it’s best to speak to your doctor.
  • If you’ve successfully stopped smoking since your diagnosis, avoid any temptation and ask the people around you to be respectful and not smoke around you.

We really hope you enjoy your trip!
