Tips for travelling with a heart condition

If you’re travelling with heart problems, it’s important to be aware of any necessary precautions you may need to take when planning your trip. From choosing your destination to ensuring you have enough medication to last you, preparation is key! Read on for our helpful tips on travelling with heart problems!

Planning your trip

  • Early planning will help you feel more relaxed and prepared for your holiday. Depending on the severity of your heart problems, you should check with your GP to confirm that you’re fit to travel.
  • If you are, consider the duration and environments you or your loved ones will be comfortable travelling in with your heart problems. If you’re on any medications, then request enough from your doctor to last the duration of your trip, and a few extra days just in case unexpected delays occur.

Choosing your travel destination

  • Consider your heart problems when choosing your travel destination. Try to avoid areas that are hilly as well as areas with high altitudes as lower levels of oxygen can cause breathlessness and angina, which may trigger your heart problems symptoms.
  • Try also to avoid destinations with widely fluctuating temperatures throughout the day and instead chose areas with steady climates.

Arranging flights and medical equipment

  • To avoid unnecessary stress while going through security at the airport, inform your airline beforehand of your heart problems condition. If you have a pacemaker or ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) fitted, you may want to let security know of this as it’s likely to set off metal detectors.
  • People with heart problems tend to be more prone to DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) that can occur from sitting for prolonged periods. To prevent this from occurring, it’s a good idea to purchase compression stockings to wear on the flight. These can help prevent it as can doing subtle leg exercises to keep your blood circulation going. Avoid alcohol and caffeine while on your flight and drink plenty of water before you fly.
  • If you’re travelling within Europe, you’ll be entitled to an Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). The GHIC will allow you to access medical care in other European countries at lower cost or free. It should be made aware that this isn’t an alternative to medical travel insurance coverage, so always take out the necessary insurance policy alongside it when traveling. The GHIC would not cover you should you need to be flown home in an emergency.

Enjoying your holiday

  • The best way to fully enjoy your holiday when you arrive is to relax and try not to overexert yourself. If you are travelling with someone who has a heart condition, be mindful of their needs and aware that they may need to rest for a while when you arrive at your destination.
  • Though you should enjoy your time away as much as you can, you should also continue to adhere to any helpful lifestyle practices your doctor has recommended such as eating fresh, whole foods and avoiding processed foods as best you can.
  • Depending on your doctor’s recommendations, you should be able to enjoy excursions with your travel companions, resting intermittently when needed.
