Frequently asked questions

What if you are waiting for treatment for your heart condition?

We’re pleased to say we can still offer you a quote. If you have been given a date for your treatment, simply declare the name of your heart condition during your quote. You may be asked questions about treatment, but the most important detail is declaring your diagnosis.

If you are yet to be given a date for your treatment, you have the ability to add the optional extra of Waiting List cover. Also, be sure to answer that you are on a waiting list for treatment during the initial medical warranty section.

Do you need to declare a heart attack that happened many years ago?

Yes, you will need to declare any previous heart conditions that you have been diagnosed with. To see a full list of medical conditions that you always need to declare, view our Medical Warranty.

What if your heart condition is undiagnosed?

Unfortunately, we are unable to offer cover when your diagnosis is unknown.

Please contact your Doctor for further information. As soon as your diagnosis is confirmed, we would be happy to offer you a quote.

Are any heart devices covered?

We can confirm that any heart devices – such as a pacemaker – are covered under your medical expenses. This includes any necessary replacements or repairs.

If there is more than one name for your medical condition, what should you declare?

In this circumstance, you can select one of the names for your medical conditions.

For example, as a heart attack is a symptom of ischaemic heart disease, you can declare either name during your quote. Please note, entering just one of the names you will automatically link onto questions about the other.

With regards to declaring procedures, always start with declaring your medical condition first. By answering all of the questions about your condition, you can be sure you’ve told us all we need to know about your treatments.

Tips when travelling after a heart attack

  • Talk to your doctor about your trip and find out if they have any specific advice that you should follow while you’re on holiday. They have the best understanding of your heart condition, and they can let you know of any precautions you should – such as getting up from your seat at least every two hours to improve blood circulation.
  • If you have an implanted cardiac defibrillator, you should request a hand search at security if possible. There have been no reports of ICD dysfunction caused by metal detectors, but researchers say there could be a theoretical risk.
  • When you are on a special diet for your heart problems at home, try to follow your diet as much as possible on your trip. If you have heart issues, eating too much salt can increase your risk of symptoms – so avoid excessively salty foods while travelling.
  • If you experience heart symptoms, get emergency medical help right away. You will then need to contact the medical emergency assistance company as detailed in your medical travel insurance policy. You can find the correct telephone number to call for your policy here: Medical Emergency contact numbers.
  • If there are any changes to your health before you travel, including any new medication, please contact our Customer Care Team on 01708 339029 and we’ll be happy to update your cover.
