Going away just the once in the next 12 months? Single Trip Travel Insurance covers you for unexpected events like medical emergencies, cancellations or loss or damage to your belongings while you’re away.

With no upper age limit and cover for over 1,300 different medical conditions, with one trip Travel Insurance you can  relax and plan your adventure.

What is Single Trip Travel Insurance – and do you need it?

Single Trip cover is what you need if you’re going away just once in a 12-month period.

Great for short or long trips, whether abroad or in the UK, here are our top reasons why you need Travel Insurance for a single trip:

    • It can be cost-effective: One-off trip insurance can be cheaper than Annual Multi Trip Insurance if you’re only going on one holiday in the next 12 months. That’s because you’ll only pay for the number of days you’re away and the destinations you visit.
    • Tailored to you: You can design your policy to suit the type of activities you enjoy the most. From Gadget Cover to Golf, you can add additional cover to suit your needs.
    • Cover if you cancel: If you get Single Trip Insurance as soon as you’ve booked your holiday (and buy a policy which includes cancellation cover), you’re protected if you need to cancel for particular reasons.
    • Essential for pre-existing medical conditions: Insurance is important for everyone heading off on their travels. But if you have an existing medical condition, finding the best Single Trip Travel Insurance that covers you properly is a must. With a standard policy, you would need to pay for any medical costs incurred due to your pre-existing condition. And when you’re abroad, these types of costs can quickly mount up. According to the Association of British Insurers, the average claim for emergency medical treatment abroad is at its highest since records began, with claims costing as much as £250,000.
    • Essential even if you have a GHIC: If your one trip is to a European getaway, applying for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is a good idea. But because the scheme won’t cover the cost of all medical treatments or repatriation costs, you’ll still need Travel Insurance before you go to avoid nasty surprises. For example, the cost of emergency medical treatment and repatriation for one UK traveller in Spain was £124,000.

With Single Trip Insurance from AllClear you can travel worry-free and see the world with confidence.

What does AllClear’s Single Trip Travel Insurance cover?

With AllClear’s Single Trip Insurance you’re protected against unforeseen events that might pop up while you’re away on holiday. This could include anything from emergency medical costs to a stolen bag.

We provide Single Trip Insurance, that even covers existing health conditions, and your one-off trip can last up to 365 days.

  • What’s covered?

    • Emergency medical expenses and repatriation costs – This includes the costs of tests, medications and procedures needed to treat an illness or injury while away. You’ll also be covered for repatriation to bring you safely back to the UK. Without Travel Insurance, costs for these kinds of expenses can quickly run into the thousands.
    • Cancellation cover for flight and accommodation costs if an unexpected event means you have to cancel your trip before you go (providing your policy includes cancellation cover) .
    • Curtailment – Cover if you need to return home early following an emergency.
    • Travel delay – If your flight is delayed, we’ll compensate you for the time.
    • Personal belongings – You’ll be covered if your baggage or its contents are lost or stolen.
    • Personal liability– Cover for your legal expenses and any liability due if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while you’re away on holiday.
    • Legal protection cover– Provides cover for your legal expenses if you have to claim compensation or damages due to something that happened while you were away on holiday.
  • What’s not covered?

    • Claims below the value of the excess: For most claims you won’t be covered for the Travel Insurance excess (the first part of any claim).
    • Trips outside region of cover: Your cover is limited to trips within the designated region of cover you chose.
    • Known events or circumstances: Claims related to events or issues that you knew about before buying the Travel Insurance or before booking any individual trip are not covered.
    • Medical conditions you don’t declare: You need to declare all of your medical conditions as fit within the medical warranty.
    • Choosing not to travel: We know that sometimes plans change, but you’re only covered for cancellation where the reason falls within the policy terms and conditions.

Frequently asked questions on Single Trip Travel Insurance

Is Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance more cost-effective than Single Trip?

It can be, but it all depends on the kind of travel you’ll be doing. Consumer champion, Which? found that, if you’re going on three holidays, each of one week or more, an annual policy will be cheaper every time. According to the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA), this is based on how insurers calculate risk.

But it’s worth considering where you’ll be going, and what you plan to be doing when you get there. For example, if you’re travelling to Europe three times but also have a holiday to the US planned, it could be cheaper to buy an annual European policy, then arrange a separate Single Trip policy for your visit to the States.

Single Trip Insurance offers further benefits too. You can tailor each Single Trip policy to the type of holiday you’re taking, which offers you greater flexibility. For example, if you’re planning a one-off trip with extended family, Group Travel Insurance can cover between 2 and 10 travellers, and you don’t even need to be related, or live at the same address.

When should you start your Single Trip Travel Insurance?

The full benefits of your Single Trip Insurance will begin on the travel dates you have selected. But if you’ve opted for cancellation cover to be included, this starts as soon as you buy your policy. For this reason, it’s ideal to buy your Travel Insurance as soon as you book.

How early? Take a tip from money-saving expert Martin Lewis. “If you have booked your holiday, but don’t have Travel Insurance, do it tonight. Otherwise, you’re running a risk. Don’t leave it; that’s pointless.”

Does Single Trip Travel Insurance cover cancellation?

Issues may seem unlikely when you’re booking your dream getaway, but any number of events, such as illness or injury, could lead to cancelled plans. If you don’t have the right Travel Insurance, you could lose the money you’ve paid for a trip you don’t take.

Single Trip Travel Insurance from AllClear includes cancellation cover, but you can decide to exclude this option. It’s worth remembering that cancellation claims are extremely common.

In fact, over the past five years, the most common reasons for travel insurance claims among Brits have been trip cancellation and lost belongings, which have accounted for 35% and 31% of claims respectively.

When to start Single Trip Travel Insurance so it covers cancellation?

You can buy your Single Trip Travel Insurance up to 12 months before your holiday. If you have included cancellation cover, the cover begins as soon as you buy your policy.

How much is Single Trip Travel Insurance?

The cost of a Single Trip Travel Insurance policy will vary from person to person. The premium is based on trip duration, destination, age and medical conditions.

Do you need Single Trip Travel Insurance if you have a GHIC card?

If you’re travelling within Europe, applying for a GHIC card is a sensible idea. GHIC stands for Global Health Insurance Card. If you need medical treatment in the EU, it could save you money. That’s because using it can remove the excess for medical claims on your Travel Insurance.

You can use a GHIC card in any EU country, plus Montenegro, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

But while a GHIC card offers valuable healthcare cover in Europe, it has its limitations. In fact, a GHIC card and Single Trip Travel Insurance serve different purposes. While the GHIC card helps with state-provided healthcare within the EU, Single Trip Travel Insurance offers a wider range of cover for unexpected events on your travels.

A GHIC card covers:

  • Medically necessary state-provided healthcare on the same terms as local residents.
  • Emergency treatment, hospital stays, and doctor consultations.

A GHIC card doesn’t cover:

  • Treatment in a private hospital or clinic.
  • Repatriation if you need to be flown back home for medical reasons.
  • Non-medical expenses like lost luggage, trip cancellation, or travel delays.

Single Trip Travel Insurance remains crucial for many travellers for the following reasons:

  • The GHIC card may not offer full cover for pre-existing medical conditions. Single Trip Travel Insurance gives you peace of mind with cover for unexpected medical costs and repatriation.
  • Single Trip Travel Insurance can cover a range of events beyond medical emergencies, such as trip cancellation, lost luggage, and personal liability.
  • Single trip Travel Insurance from AllClear gives you access to a 24/7 emergency assistance team.
