Yes, travelling with the right Travel Insurance is essential. This will make sure you’re protected against unexpected medical expenses, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other unexpected events during your journey.
Without it, you could face unwanted stress in the event of an emergency, as well as hefty medical bills, expenses for rescheduling or cancelling trips, and the inconvenience of replacing lost or stolen luggage.
Health insurance isn’t a legal requirement in Europe. However, comprehensive Medical Travel Insurance for your trip to Europe is essential to make sure you’re protected.
For example, if you were to injure yourself in Spain and need a flight home, this could cost you upwards of £25,000 without comprehensive cover.
Our European Travel Insurance covers emergency medical care, including pre-existing health conditions.
Your Europe Travel Insurance should cover:
If you’re planning to enjoy a European cruise, you can add Cruise Travel Insurance to our Gold Plus policies, and it is covered as standard on Platinum.
Insurance for European trips tends to be cheaper than cover for heading further afield. However, the destination within Europe can affect the cost of cover. Spain, for example, has higher medical costs than most of Europe. This means that insurance for Spain will usually cost more than a policy for Italy.
Our Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance is available either for the whole of Europe or for Europe excluding Spain, the Balearic Islands, The Canaries, Turkey, Cyprus and Malta, which may be cheaper if you’re not travelling to these countries.
The length of the trip will also affect the cost of the policy. If you plan to take multiple trips to Europe, an annual policy will usually work out better value.
Although it is not a legal requirement to have a GHIC card, it is recommended you travel with a GHIC card as well as European Travel Insurance if you plan to visit Europe.
A study by the UK Government found that 17% of travellers wrongly assumed that when travelling in Europe they don’t need insurance because they have an GHIC card.
Your GHIC card only covers you for certain medical treatments within the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. It does not cover additional expenses such as repatriation, private medical care, or non-medical costs like lost luggage or trip cancellations.
Meanwhile, European Travel Insurance covers you for all the above.
