Russell Wallace

“Spain is a top travel destination for Brits, year after year. While it’s generally a safe country for visitors, accidents can happen. With the heat and adventurous activities added to the mix, health risks can increase. That’s why it’s important to make sure you’ve covered for unexpected medical costs and not stuck with a hefty bill.”

What our customers say

Cheaper than comparison sites

“My wife and I booked and paid for a holiday in Spain and were seeking travel insurance. After visiting various comparison sites the costs for insurance were turning out to be almost the same price as that for one of our holidays due to our pre-existing medical conditions. I had received a letter from AllClear, advertising their policies, so I decided to give them a try. To my amazement their costs were almost half of those of the comparison sites.”

Frequently Asked Questions on Spain Travel Insurance

Do you need Travel Insurance for Spain?

It is not a legal requirement to have Travel Insurance to enter Spain. However, the NHS and the UK Government both recommend that all British nationals have the proper level of Travel Insurance before leaving the country. If you don’t, you may have to foot the bill if anything goes wrong while you’re away.

How much is Travel Insurance for Spain?

The cost of Travel Insurance is based on many different factors, including things like:

  • Your age
  • Your medical history
  • Your destination – even the specific part of Spain you’re visiting
  • How long you’re going for

Because each can vary from person to person and even from trip to trip, there is no standard set price for Travel Insurance.

Does the GHIC/EHIC card cover travel to Spain?

The GHIC (previously EHIC) will cover you for any emergency medical treatment while you are in Spain. However, the UK Government advises that the GHIC is not a replacement for Travel Insurance. Your GHIC will not protect you against the following:

  • Changes or cancellations of your travel or accommodation bookings.
  • Additional standard costs for treatment.
  • Medical repatriation back to the UK.
  • Treatment that is ruled non-urgent.

While in Spain, there may not always be public healthcare facilities near some tourist areas. In this case, some hotels will call private doctors or ambulances to take patients to private hospitals. The GHIC or EHIC will not be accepted there.

Is Travel Insurance to Spain more expensive?

Travel Insurance for Spain can sometimes be more expensive than Insurance for other European countries. This is especially true of the Canary Islands. Spain, along with Italy and Greece, has high levels of privatised healthcare. This means treatments can be more expensive. This makes the price of Travel Insurance more expensive.

Is healthcare free in Spain for tourists?

Healthcare is not free for tourists in Spain. If you need emergency medical treatment while in Spain, you will need a GHIC or Travel Insurance that covers emergency medical procedures. Ideally, you should have both. Bear in mind that the GHIC will not cover any procedures that are deemed non-urgent.
