What our Customers Say

Getting travel insurance with Crohn’s disease

Declaring your Crohn’s disease is vital when completing the quote journey so that you’re covered for any Crohn’s related treatment or complications that could potentially arise while you’re on holiday.

What medical conditions related to Crohn’s disease do you cover?

We are also able to offer cover for ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel disease.

Your Crohn’s disease isn’t severe, do you still need to declare it?

While your Crohn’s disease may be under control with medication, it’s still extremely important that you declare it. If you require medical treatment or need more medication due to damage or loss, and you fail to declare your condition, you wouldn’t be covered should you need to make a claim relating to your Crohn’s disease.

How is your premium for Crohn’s disease calculated?

Your premium will be calculated once you have answered the questions within the medical screening process about your trip length, destination, age and medical conditions. Your premium will then reflect your specific circumstances following the details you have entered.

 Crohn’s disease travel tips

If you have Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis or any other inflammatory bowel disease, you will probably know the appropriate precautions to take when travelling, however, you may also find your condition tricky to manage when you just want to focus on enjoying yourself on holiday. Read on for some helpful tips on travelling with Crohn’s disease:

Planning your trip

  • The key to travelling with Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis is in the preparation! You might want to seek medical advice before you book your holiday and ensure you have enough medication to last the length of your trip (plus a few days extra in case of delays, damage or loss). When booking your holiday, find out if the hotel can cater to any dietary needs you may have before you go ahead and book an all inclusive trip. Do some research on your chosen destination and find out about the food on offer there to ensure your requirements are met.

Flights and trains

  • Take your medication (subject to airline restrictions) with you in your hand luggage as well as a change of clothes, disposable tissues, hand sanitiser and any nutritional supplements or snacks your GP might recommend. Choose an aisle seat for convenience’s sake and you may want to request a specific meal on board before you travel to avoid anything which may irritate you.
  • You could take antibacterial wipes to clean the tray and armrests in your seat – some are rarely given a deep clean in between changeovers. Making the airline or train line aware that you’re travelling with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis will help in their planning, as well as your own.

Travelling by car with Crohn’s

  • Plan your route and try to travel at a time the roads won’t be congested. Arrange to stop at service stations every hour or so if needed. It may mean steering clear of the scenic route and travelling on motorways, however, at least you can travel in comfort and have access to facilities in an emergency.

Learn the lingo to get what you need travelling with Crohn’s disease

  • If you’re travelling to a country where English isn’t widely spoken, you might want to learn a few key phrases such as ‘bathroom’, ‘emergency’ and ‘doctor’ in case of emergency. You may find bringing a copy of medical records useful and having them translated in case you require emergency treatment. Also, keep a list of your Crohn’s or colitis medication’s generic name with you; brand names will probably differ between countries.

Invest in a ‘can’t wait’ card when travelling with Crohn’s disease

  • A ‘can’t wait card’ is designed to allow you to get quick access to bathroom facilities without having to explain yourself. While the card is written in English, the card has appropriate logos and simple language on it so it should still help while you’re abroad. These are available from Crohn’s and Colitis UK.

Annual multi-trip or single trip?

An annual multi-trip policy allows you to travel multiple times within a year. The maximum duration of these trips varies between policies. However, it is usually between 31 to 45 days. If you need a longer trip duration or, if you only plan on travelling once in the year, then a single trip travel insurance policy may be right for you.

What will affect the price of your policy?

We calculate the premiums you’re displayed using multiple factors. These include age, trip duration, destination and pre-existing medical conditions.
