Aged 65 or over? Our Travel Insurance for the over 65’s will cover a range of unexpected costs when you’re on holiday. We’ll cover your emergency medical expenses when you’re on holiday and cancellation costs before you go, even if you have a pre-existing condition. You’ll have the reassurance you need to make the most of your retirement years by travelling with comprehensive cover.

Why do you need specialist Over 65s Travel Insurance?

Over 65s Travel Insurance offers tailored protection for older travellers, with specialist cover for pre-existing medical conditions, trip cancellations, lost baggage and more.

Unlike some other Travel Insurance providers, our Travel Insurance policies have no upper age limit, so if you’re aged over 65 and looking for quality cover, we can help.

We can cover all pre-existing medical conditions, so if you have a medical problem or flare up of an existing condition while you’re away,  you’ll be insured for up to unlimited costs for emergency medical treatment. Plus, if you have a serious illness before you travel, you’ll be covered for the cost of cancellation too, up to £25,000.

As we age, the risks while travelling can increase, making comprehensive Travel Insurance more important than ever.

Why is it essential?

    • One in two people aged over 60 will have a fall at least once a year, according to the NHS.  If you have a fall while travelling, our Travel Insurance will cover your costs. With air ambulance prices as high as £100K for some AllClear claims in 2025, Travel Insurance is essential to ensure you won’t face expensive bills.
    • Older adults (over 65) are statistically more likely to have pre-existing medical conditions. According to our partners AgeUK, Over half (54%) of older people have at least two chronic conditions. We cover over 1,300 different medical conditions. If unexpected issues arise on your trip as a result of these conditions, you’ll know you’re protected.
    • Emergency assistance: With our 24/7 english-speaking emergency assistance services, if issues arise, you know that support is just a phone call away.

Even the best-planned holidays can go off course. With Over 65s Travel Insurance from AllClear, you’re protected from medical bills, cancellations, and other common travel disruptions, so you can travel  peace of mind.

What does AllClear’s over 65s Travel Insurance cover?

Our Travel Insurance for Over 65s gives you comprehensive protection – whether it’s a city break in Europe or a big trip further afield.

  • What’s covered?

    • Medical cover – AllClear policies include emergency medical cover, including for existing conditions you have. This includes prescription medication and medical equipment.
    • Cancellation and cutting your trip short – Cover for your flight and accommodation costs if you unexpectedly have to cancel before you go, or need to return home early following an emergency.
    • Your baggage – Protection against the cost of stolen, damaged or lost luggage and personal possessions. You can also choose to add extra cover for gadgets to your policy.
    • Travel delays and missed departure – If your flight is delayed, we’ll compensate you for the time. If you miss your flight, you’ll also be covered for accommodation and transport costs.
    • Personal liability – Cover for your legal expenses and any liability due if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while you’re away on holiday
    • All ages – We think Travel Insurance should be available to as many people as possible, that’s why our Travel Insurance for over 65’s has no upper age limit.
  • What’s not covered?

    • Deciding not to travel – We do not provide any cover if you can travel but choose not to.
    • Other regions – Your Over 65’s Travel Insurance won’t cover you if you travel outside your chosen region, although you can contact us to upgrade your policy at any time.
    • Claims below the value of excess – You’re not covered for claims that fall below the value of the excess stated in your policy.
    • Medical conditions you fail to declare – You need to provide us with an accurate medical history when you buy Travel Insurance so we can provide you with the right cover. This is especially vital for senior travellers, and those with long-term illness.

AllClear vs. standard policies: a comparison

Not all travel insurance is the same

Here’s why specialist cover makes all the difference for travellers over 65:

AllClear specialist cover:

  • No upper age limit
  • Specialist medical screening for complex conditions
  • Tailored extras such as optional waiting list cover (available as an add-on and subject to specific terms, conditions and exclusions)
  • 24/7 UK-based medical helpline

Standard Travel Insurance

  • May have age limits that may restrict cover for older travellers
  • May exclude medical conditions
  • May offer less specialist support for complex medical needs

The choice isn’t just about price – it’s about ensuring you have the right protection when you need it most.

Choose the right level of cover

We tailor all our travel policies to your specific requirements, which is why we have three different levels of policy available: Gold, Gold Plus, and Platinum.

Defaqto has rated AllClear Plus Travel Insurance as 5 Star. This means that the cover provided is top quality. Consumer Champion Which? has rated our Gold Plus and Platinum products as Which? Best Buy for 2 years running.

One phone call connects you to our medical assistance team who can liaise directly with hospitals, arrange payment for treatment, and organise repatriation to the UK if needed.

This service is included with all our policies at no extra cost. When you’re facing a medical emergency abroad, you’ll have expert support to guide you through every step, removing the stress so you can focus on getting better.

AllClear’s Travel Insurance for Over 65s with pre-existing medical conditions

We believe everyone should have the right to travel – no matter their age or health history. That’s why our Over 65s Travel Insurance covers over 1,300 pre-existing medical conditions, including those that other insurers may exclude. As a Specialist Medical Travel Insurance provider, AllClear has helped over 3.5 million travellers stay protected wherever they go.

Pre-existing medical conditions we regularly cover include:

Our medical screening process is quick and simple, and can be done online or over the phone. Just declare your health conditions when you get a quote to make sure your policy offers the right level of protection.

Do you need to declare your pre-existing medical conditions for Travel Insurance

Yes – when buying Travel Insurance for over 65s, it’s important to declare all pre-existing medical conditions. This applies to you and anyone else included on your policy.

We define a pre-existing condition as any illness or medical issue for which you have:

  • Been to a hospital, clinic, or GP surgery to have medical treatment diagnosed or advised within the last two years. This also applies to remote consultations, either on the phone or through an app.
  • Been placed on a waiting list, which might mean you’ll have to miss or cut short your trip
  • Been advised you have a terminal illness.

If you don’t declare a condition, your policy may not cover any related claims – so it’s always best to be open with us.

You can declare your conditions in minutes through our secure online medical screening process, or speak with our friendly UK-based team for expert support and guidance.

Leisure and winter sports activities for over 65s

With AllClear, you’ll be covered for a number of activities as standard such as cycling, hiking, canoing and camel trekking.

Looking to ski? We also offer a winter sports add-on that covers you for piste closure, and protects you in case your own or your hired equipment is damaged or lost.

But if you’d prefer to relax on your holiday, your comprehensive Travel Insurance will cover that too!

What factors will affect the cost of over 65s Travel Insurance?

We personalise every quote – so your premium is based on your unique circumstances. While age and pre-existing medical conditions are two important factors, there are a few other things that can affect the cost:

  • Your destination: Some places carry a greater risk of you needing to claim or a more expensive health care system.
  • Activities planned: While we cover some activities as standard, you’ll need to pay an additional premium to take part in others.
  • Trip length: The longer you’re away, the greater the odds of a claim, and hence, the impact on the policy premium.
  • Additional cover: You may want to include extra cover for a special type of holiday, such as a cruise or golfing holiday.

Tips from our experts on travelling when over 65

If you are over 65 and travelling with medical conditions…

“Always pack your medications, medical supplies, and any necessary medical devices in your carry-on luggage. Never check these items, as checked luggage can be delayed or lost. If your medications require refrigeration (such as some injectable cancer treatments), bring a portable cooler with ice packs, and coordinate with the airline about in-flight storage options.

Frequently Asked Questions about Over 65s Travel Insurance

Is Travel Insurance more expensive when you turn 65?

You might notice a small increase in price after turning 65, and that’s mainly because insurers see a higher chance of claims as we get older. But it’s not just about age. Your destination, trip length, and any medical conditions also play a big part. The good news? With AllClear, you can still get comprehensive cover that’s tailored to you, at a price that makes sense.

Which Travel Insurance is recommended for over 65s?

It really depends on your plans. If you’ve got one holiday booked this year, our Single Trip Travel Insurance is a great fit. But if you’re planning to travel more than once, it might be worth going for Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance. It’s more convenient and could save you money in the long run.

All our policies have no upper age limit and include Covid cover as standard, so you can travel with added peace of mind.

You can also tailor your policy with optional extras like:

  • Travelling companion cover so your travel buddy can stay with you if anything unexpected happens.
  • Waiting list cover is ideal if you’re awaiting treatment and want to safeguard your plans in case you need to cancel or cut your trip short.
  • Golf cover protects your clubs and green fees while you play.
  • Gadget cover protects your most important items for up to up to £3,000.
  • Excess waiver means you won’t pay anything if you need to claim.

How often can you travel with over 65's annual Travel Insurance?

How often you can travel will depend on the type of policy you have:

You may be able to extend this to 50 or 55 days per trip, depending on your policy level, unless you’re aged 71 or over and travelling to the USA, Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean, where the maximum trip length is 35 days and extensions are not available.

Keep in mind that the total time abroad across all your trips in a year is limited to 183 days under an Annual Multi-trip policy.

What if your medical conditions change after buying Over 65s Travel Insurance?

If anything changes with your health after you’ve bought your policy, it’s really important to let us know. You can update your details quickly online or by calling our UK-based Customer Care Team on 01708 339026.

Keeping your policy up to date ensures you’re fully protected when you travel, and that any claims related to new conditions are valid.

Do you need to declare all your medical conditions for Travel Insurance?

Yes, it’s essential to declare all your medical conditions when buying Travel Insurance. That way, we can make sure you’re properly covered if anything happens while you’re away.

If you don’t tell us about a condition and need to make a related claim, your policy might not cover it. You could end up having to pay the costs yourself. It’s always better to be upfront so you can travel with confidence.

Does being over 65 affect how long you can travel on the Travel Insurance policy?

No, your age does not affect how long you can travel on our Travel Insurance policies.

The length of stay is only dictated by the policy you’ve chosen:

However, if you’re aged 71 or over and travelling to the USA, Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean, your maximum trip length is 35 days, and the extension option is not available.

Also, the total amount of time you can spend abroad on an Annual Multi-trip policy is capped at 183 days per year.

Can you get Over 65s Travel Insurance if you’re on a waiting list for treatment?

Yes, you can still take out Over 65s Travel Insurance even if you’re on a medical waiting list. We recommend getting Waiting List Cover as an optional extra when buying your policy.

This optional extra gives you peace of mind, so if your treatment date changes and you need to cancel or cut your trip short, you’ll be protected.

Can someone else join your Travel Insurance policy if they're under 65?

Yes, you can add more people to your Travel Insurance policy, no matter their age. As part of our Group Travel Insurance, we can insure between two to ten people on a single policy. There’s no age limit, but we do need to know if anyone in the group has pre-existing medical conditions.

If you’ve already got a policy that you want to add people to, simply chat with us online or call us on 01708 339026.

How often can you travel with Travel Insurance for over 65s?

We believe that your age shouldn’t limit how often you can travel. With our Travel Insurance for over 65s, you’re able to travel as often as you want if you’ve got Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance. This covers you for multiple trips throughout the year,  as long as each trip isn’t longer than 31 consecutive days.

Who underwrites AllClear Travel Insurance?

AllClear Travel Insurance is tailored for older people who are travelling with medical conditions and is underwritten by Zurich.

What if you're on a waiting list for treatment

Our optional waiting list cover is available as an add-om

Even if you have declared all your conditions you may be waiting for treatment or further investigation. If this appointment comes up, either before or during the dates for your trip, you may need to cancel or cut short your trip.

With this add on, you have cover for cancellation or cutting your trip short that may occur as a result.

This specialist optional add-on is designed specifically for the realities of NHS waiting times.

Please note: Waiting list cover is not available for Annual-multi trip policies.
