Why do you need European Travel Insurance?

European Travel Insurance is designed to protect you and provide peace of mind when travelling to Europe.

This covers you for medical emergencies, including those relating to pre-existing medical conditions you declare. You will also have cover for lost luggage, travel delays and personal liability.

Without European Travel Insurance, you could face some high medical costs and be out of pocket should mishaps occur. • Missed departure within your control – While we know that things can go wrong, we can’t cover you if you miss your transport because of an issue within your control
    • Deciding not to travel – We only offer cancellation cover for specific reasons, such as illness, injury or bereavement. For full details, please see your policy documents
    • Airline strikes or actions that disrupt your trip If your trip is disrupted due to an airline strike or something similar, you would need to contact the airline directly
    • High-risk activities – You won’t be able to get cover for. > However extra protection is available for an additional premium

Find the best Travel Insurance for Europe

Having the right insurance in place before you set off means fewer worries while you’re in Europe. Travellers heading to Spain made the highest number of medical claims (20,000) – likely because it’s also the most popular holiday spot for UK travellers.

Whether you’re travelling to Paris, Rome, Cyprus or elsewhere in Europe, you need the right policy.

Here are some to consider:

  • Single Trip Travel Insurance is ideal if you are only planning one holiday, cruise or land, within a year
  • Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance covers all trips within a year. This could include a cruise around Scandinavia or multiple trips across central Europe. This may be more cost-effective than buying Single Trip Travel Insurance for each trip
  • Group Travel Insurance is a fantastic option if you’re travelling with a big group as you’ll all be covered under the same policy. This could include anywhere from two to ten travellers.
  • Family Travel Insurance covers you and your family throughout your trip to Europe. With this policy, everyone has the same level of protection. This means you don’t need to take our separate single policies for each person

What our Customers Say

Do you need Travel Insurance for Europe?

Yes, travelling with the right Travel Insurance is essential. This will make sure you’re protected against unexpected medical expenses, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other unexpected events during your journey.

Without it, you could face unwanted stress in the event of an emergency, as well as hefty medical bills, expenses for rescheduling or cancelling trips, and the inconvenience of replacing lost or stolen luggage.

Do you need medical or health insurance for Europe?

Health insurance isn’t a legal requirement in Europe. However, comprehensive Medical Travel Insurance for your trip to Europe is essential to make sure you’re protected.

For example, if you were to injure yourself in Spain and need a flight home, this could cost you upwards of £25,000 without comprehensive cover.

Our European Travel Insurance covers emergency medical care, including pre-existing health conditions.

What insurance do you need to travel to Europe?

Your Europe Travel Insurance should cover:

  • Medical expenses and hospital benefit
  • Cancelling and cutting short your holiday
  • Delayed departure
  • Personal belongings and baggage
  • Accommodation cover
  • Personal accident and liability

If you’re planning to enjoy a European cruise, you can add Cruise Travel Insurance to our Gold Plus policies, and it is covered as standard on Platinum.

How much does Travel Insurance to Europe cost?

Insurance for European trips tends to be cheaper than cover for heading further afield. However, the destination within Europe can affect the cost of cover. Spain, for example, has higher medical costs than most of Europe. This means that insurance for Spain will usually cost more than a policy for Italy.

Our Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance is available either for the whole of Europe or for Europe excluding Spain, the Balearic Islands, The Canaries, Turkey, Cyprus and Malta, which may be cheaper if you’re not travelling to these countries.

The length of the trip will also affect the cost of the policy. If you plan to take multiple trips to Europe, an annual policy will usually work out better value.

Do you need a GHIC card to visit Europe?

Although it is not a legal requirement to have a GHIC card, it is recommended you travel with a GHIC card as well as European Travel Insurance if you plan to visit Europe.

A study by the UK Government found that 17% of travellers wrongly assumed that when travelling in Europe they don’t need insurance because they have an GHIC card.

Your GHIC card only covers you for certain medical treatments within the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. It does not cover additional expenses such as repatriation, private medical care, or non-medical costs like lost luggage or trip cancellations.

Meanwhile, European Travel Insurance covers you for all the above.
