Mobility travel insurance covers you if you’re living with any degree of mobility impairment and wish to travel with peace of mind. This type of insurance covers you for medical emergencies, which is vital to prevent unexpected medical bills and give you the support you need if you have any medical problems while you are away.
Almost 1 in 5 people (19%) in the UK have a disability, of which 59% are people with mobility problems. We believe having a mobility problem shouldn’t stop you enjoying a holiday. Though sometimes it might mean that you need specialist mobility travel insurance.
Some travel insurance policies have a single article limit for lost or damaged items, such as a limit of £200 on an AllClear Gold Plus policy, for example. However, when it comes to mobility aids the rules are different. On the same policy, you could claim up to £2,500 for your mobility aid.
In addition, if your carer – who is insured on the same policy – has to cancel or cut short their trip due to an unforeseen emergency, you can do the same and also claim for lost expenses. Or, If you wish to continue your journey, we will pay up to £1,000 in total for the costs of extra accommodation and transport to replace your original carer; on AllClear Gold and Gold Plus.
What’s more, depending on the policy you select, you can exclude Cancellation Cover, waive your excesses, or add Optional Extras to your policy.
One Optional Extra that may be useful to you is Travelling Companions Cover, which means even if your carer or travelling companion are insured with an alternate provider, they can still be covered for Cancellation and Curtailment if anything happens in relation to your health.
Providing cover for those who need mobility travel insurance is important to us.
That’s why we are working with Motability (a scheme which provides a way for those with disabilities to lease a car), in a joint bid to help those with mobility problems travel freely.
Sometimes a problem with mobility can lead to a secondary medical condition – or vise versa. However, you will always need to enter the name(s) of the medical conditions that are related to your mobility problem – rather than your type of disability. For example, if arthritis caused you to need a wheelchair for travelling, you would simply declare ‘arthritis’ during the Medical section of your quote, and the questions with regards arthritis will ask about you having mobility aids.
If you have any concerns about your journey being uncomfortable, you might want to speak to your local GP or your booking company – you may be surprised at the accommodations they will make!
If you’re taking a flight, some airlines require you to carry a ‘fit-to-travel’ note when travelling with them. In any case, you need to be certain that your doctor would confirm you fit to travel to obtain valid travel insurance. If you are unsure on such matters, it is best to give yourself plenty of time to check with your GP, or your airline’s requirements. Yet in terms of getting your travel insurance from us, we would only need a letter from your doctor confirming your state of health in the event of a claim – and only in particular circumstances.
