Get the most out of your trips with our helpful guides
Travelling with a renal condition often means thinking a few steps ahead, from medication and appointments to choosing the right destination. The last thing you need is uncertainty about what would happen if something went wrong while you’re away.
Travel Insurance for renal patients is designed with those realities in mind, offering protection for emergency medical expenses, cancellation and other key benefits. With the right cover in place, you can travel feeling prepared, protected and free to enjoy the journey.
What is Travel Insurance for renal patients, and why do you need it?
Living with a renal condition shouldn’t mean travel is off the table, but it does mean your insurance needs to work harder. Travel insurance for renal patients is specialist cover that reflects the realities of kidney disease, dialysis, transplant recovery or ongoing treatment, rather than ignoring them.
Standard Travel Insurance often excludes renal conditions altogether. That can leave you facing substantial medical costs, limited support, or a refused claim if you need treatment abroad. Having Renal Travel Insurance means your condition is properly considered, helping to protect you financially and giving you access to assistance if the unexpected happens.
Travel Insurance for renal transplant patients
After a renal transplant, many people find they have more freedom to travel again — whether it’s a short break or a long-planned holiday. The right Travel Insurance should reflect where you are in your recovery and how often you plan to travel.
AllClear offers both Single-trip and Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance for renal transplant patients, so you can choose cover that fits your plans. For those currently on a transplant waiting list, optional waiting list cover may also be available. All policies require trips to begin and end in the UK.
What does cover for renal patients usually include?
-
Emergency medical assistance available 24 hours a day
-
Cover for unexpected medical treatment while abroad
-
Replacement medication if yours is lost or stolen*
* Cover and limits vary between policies, so always check what’s included before buying.

AllClear’s Travel Insurance for renal patients with other pre-existing medical conditions
We focus on medical Travel Insurance for people with pre-existing conditions and work with insurers who are able to offer cover to most travellers. It’s important to declare every medical condition when you apply, as this allows your policy to include cover for medical treatment that may be needed while you’re abroad, including treatment related to your condition.
Cover can be considered for more than 1,300 pre-existing medical conditions, including:
-
Endocrine conditions – such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes, underactive thyroid and liver cirrhosis
-
Heart and circulatory conditions – including heart attacks, high blood pressure, heart failure and ischemic heart disease
-
Mental health conditions – such as depression, bipolar disorder and Schizophrenia
-
Muscle and joint conditions – including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and osteoporosis
-
Respiratory conditions – such as asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis
We’re specialist Medical Travel Insurance providers, with 99%+ of our customers offered cover³.
To make sure the cover offered is suitable, you’ll be asked to complete a medical screening before receiving a quote. This involves answering a few questions about your health, which may include:
-
When your condition was diagnosed
-
Any medication you currently take
-
Whether you’ve needed hospital treatment in the past
Once the medical screening is complete, you’ll be able to receive a quote for Renal Travel Insurance that’s tailored to your individual circumstances.

Will a GHIC cover medical care if you're travelling with a renal condition?
The GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) will cover any emergency medical costs while you’re travelling in a participating country in Europe. However, the UK Government recommends that all British nationals get the recommended type of Travel Insurance before they leave the country.
While the GHIC will cover emergency medical costs, it does not cover other medical expenses – such as transport to or from a hospital. It also does not cover other holiday emergencies, such as lost luggage or cancelled flights.
Will I be covered when receiving dialysis treatment while abroad?
You can obtain cover for trips if you require dialysis treatment while abroad providing the following conditions are met:
- The treatment is deemed necessary by a medical practitioner as routine treatment of your condition while on holiday.
- Your condition has been diagnosed, declared and covered on the policy.
- You are not going abroad solely for the purpose of receiving dialysis or a form of dialysis unavailable in your home country.
- You have been declared fit to travel by your general practitioner or specialist medical professional.
You must ensure that the facilities available in the area you are travelling to are of a high enough standard to safely provide dialysis treatment. You can do this by contacting Kidney Care UK.
You can not claim for the cost of any complications that arise as a result of pre-booked dialysis treatment. You can not claim for the cost of any pre-booked dialysis treatment if you are unable to go on your trip as planned.
