Bowel Cancer Travel Insurance is designed for people living with bowel cancer or in remission who want reassurance when travelling. If you’ve had surgery, are undergoing chemotherapy, living with a stoma, or attending ongoing follow-up appointments, specialist cover can consider your individual circumstances, subject to medical screening and acceptance.

Specialist Travel Insurance for bowel cancer

Medical emergencies abroad can be complex and costly, particularly if they relate to cancer treatment, medication, or post-surgical complications. Specialist Travel Insurance can include emergency medical expenses, repatriation and cancellation cover if your health changes before you travel.

We understand that bowel cancer can bring ongoing considerations, from medication and fatigue to the possibility of further treatment. That’s why we assess every application individually. Since 2000, we’ve specialised in Travel Insurance for people with pre-existing medical conditions, including cancer. Our straightforward screening process allows us to tailor cover around your bowel cancer and overall health, so you can travel with confidence and peace of mind.

Can you get Travel Insurance if you have bowel cancer?

Yes. We can consider cover for bowel cancer at different stages of your journey, subject to medical screening and acceptance. This includes:

  • Living with bowel cancer, including active or ongoing treatment
  • After treatment or in remission
  • During planned surgery or while waiting for treatment

As the UK’s most trusted Travel Insurance provider², we specialise in covering medical conditions, including all stages of bowel cancer.

Around 44,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK each year, and many continue to travel during or after treatment. Yet finding suitable Travel Insurance can be a major concern. Medical repatriation from outside the EU can cost between £65,000 and £74,000, according to ABTA.

Without the right policy, those costs could fall to you.

With AllClear, you can travel with confidence. Our policies include:

  • Up to unlimited cover for emergency medical expenses and repatriation
  • Up to £25,000 cancellation cover if complications mean you need to cancel
  • Protection for your travel companions on the same policy if you cancel due to your condition
  • Cover for lost, stolen or damaged baggage, including essential medication or medical equipment

Simply declare your condition through our straightforward medical screening process to receive a personalised quote. In fact, 99%+ of customers who complete a quote are offered cover¹.

Always read the Policy Wording for full details of terms and conditions.

Can you get Travel Insurance for different stages of bowel cancer?

In treatment

If you’re currently receiving chemotherapy, radiotherapy or other active treatment for bowel cancer, cover may still be available, subject to medical screening and acceptance.

By declaring your treatment, we can properly assess your circumstances and, if we’re able to offer cover, include your bowel cancer within your policy in line with the policy wording, terms and conditions.

In remission

If your bowel cancer is in remission, you must still declare it during medical screening. Remission does not automatically mean your condition will be included under standard Travel Insurance policies.

We assess your medical history individually and, where cover can be offered, include your bowel cancer within your policy – giving you reassurance when you travel.

Terminal diagnosis

A terminal diagnosis does not automatically prevent you from travelling. We understand how important it can be to spend meaningful time with loved ones.

Subject to medical screening and underwriting, specialist cover may be available depending on your individual circumstances.

What our Customers Say

Excellent value for money, particularly with pre-existing conditions

“I have just bought annual travel insurance after using AllClear for a short trip in December. Their website and quoting process were very straightforward and easy to navigate. I am just under a year after bowel cancer surgery and was expecting the insurance to be too expensive for me to be able to afford to travel. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is very reasonable. Would highly recommend!”

Tips for travelling with bowel cancer

Planning your trip and knowing your limits

  • Firstly, planning 4-6 weeks in advance is a great idea to ensure you can fully prepare for your holiday.
  • When planning your trip, the first thing you’ll probably want to think of is the destination. The destination and distance you’ll travel can be a huge part of making your trip easier and more enjoyable. This is particularly true if you’ve have recently had surgery. Try not to travel too far afield straight away, you may find you’re overexerting yourself.
  • There are lots of great destinations for an enjoyable, relaxing holiday which are only an hour or so away on an airplane. Or maybe you could travel by train for a relatively more comfortable and spacious journey.

Travelling with medication for bowel cancer

  • If you’re currently on prescribed medication for your bowel cancer, you will probably want to see your doctor before you travel to ensure you have enough medication to last you the duration of your holiday and some extra in case of any delays while on your travels.
  • If you know you’ll need your medication with you at all times and throughout the flight, be sure to make the airline aware of this before you travel. This is so that they don’t try and store your medication in the hold.
  • If you need to cross time zones, speak to your doctor about the new times you’ll need to take your medication if you’re unsure.
  • Also, you may want to speak to your doctor about the best times to travel. If you are having ongoing treatment (e.g. chemotherapy or radiotherapy), you may be able to plan a journey in between treatments.

Flying after a bowel cancer diagnosis

  • If you find yourself needing to go to the bathroom more since your diagnosis, it may be sensible to reserve an aisle seat on the plane when booking your flights.
  • It might also be worth opting for priority boarding so you can board before the rest of the plane’s passengers arrive. This should also give you a chance to speak to the flight attendants about your medication requirements if at all necessary.
  • If you’re finding your stomach sensitive to certain foods since your diagnosis, make the airline aware of this before you fly so they can provide you with more suitable food if necessary.

GHIC and your right to treatment and medical care abroad

  • If you’re a UK resident, you’ll be entitled to a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). The GHIC entitles you to the same level of health care as the residents in the country you’re visiting.
  • However, the GHIC isn’t a valid form of full Travel Insurance. For example, it will not cover you if you need to be brought home in an emergency, so you’ll need to make sure you have comprehensive Travel Insurance too.

Staying healthy while away

  • If you’re going somewhere with high temperatures, it’s important to sip water constantly throughout the day. Keeping some bottled water with you when you’re out and about can make this easier. Avoid tap water, fresh salad which has been washed in tap water, or ice cubes made from tap water, as this could lead to sickness and diarrhoea.
  • You could translate a list of the foods you’re sensitive to (or would otherwise like to avoid) into the language of the country you’re visiting. This could make things simpler at meal times.
  • Alcohol is not generally recommended if you’ve been diagnosed with bowel cancer. So, if you’re unsure, ask your doctor before you go and keep alcohol consumption to a minimum.

Bowel Cancer Travel Insurance FAQs

Can I get Travel Insurance if I am currently having chemotherapy for bowel cancer?

In many cases, it may be possible to get Travel Insurance while receiving chemotherapy treatment, depending on the outcome of your medical screening and underwriting. We assess each application individually, taking into account your current treatment plan, overall health, and travel destination. Many of our customers travel safely during treatment with our specialist cover, where we have been able to offer cover following medical screening.

You’ll need to declare all treatments, medications, and any recent hospital visits during your medical screening. This allows us to assess your application accurately and, if cover is offered, include all relevant conditions in your policy.

Do I need to declare my bowel cancer if I am in remission?

Absolutely. You must declare your bowel cancer even if you’re in remission. If you don’t declare your bowel cancer, it may not be included in your cover, regardless of your current status. By declaring your remission, we can assess your application correctly and, if we are able to offer cover, provide cover for any complications that might arise.

Failing to declare your condition could invalidate your entire policy and mean you would have to meet the cost of any treatment yourself if you needed medical care while abroad. Always read your policy documents carefully so you understand what is and isn’t covered.

What happens if I have a medical emergency while I am abroad?

Contact our 24/7 emergency helpline immediately. Our English-speaking medical assistance team will coordinate your care, liaise with local hospitals, and arrange payment for covered treatment. If necessary, we’ll arrange emergency repatriation to the UK, where this is covered by your policy. All emergency numbers are provided in your policy documentation, and you should save them in your phone before travelling.

Is there an age limit for your bowel cancer Travel Insurance policy?

We don’t have a set upper age limit for Travel Insurance applications. Every quote is assessed individually through medical screening, so your circumstances are considered properly.

Your premium will reflect a range of factors – including age, medical history and travel plans – but age alone does not automatically prevent us from offering cover.

We believe everyone has the right to travel. Many of our older customers travel regularly with our specialist policies, enjoying the reassurance that comes with tailored protection designed for people with medical conditions.

Will my stoma be covered under the policy?

In many cases, stoma-related complications can be considered under your bowel cancer policy, provided you have fully declared your condition during medical screening, and we have agreed to offer cover. If cover is offered, this may include emergency medical treatment abroad related to your stoma, in line with your policy wording, terms and conditions.

We recommend taking extra stoma supplies in your hand luggage and speaking to your stoma nurse before you travel for personalised advice and added reassurance.
