What if you have an EHIC card?
If you decide to travel within the EU, carrying a European Health Insurance Card can help you. The card allows you to get state healthcare at a reduced cost, or possibly for free. But always remember the EHIC does not replace travel insurance. It won’t cover for you needing to cancel the holiday before you go, or return any lost expenses should you need to come home early. Also, while you are entitled to the same treatment as local residents, the healthcare may not be the same standard as the UK. Of course, if you’re travelling outside of Europe, travel insurance becomes even more vital.

Points to consider when travelling with lung cancer
Choosing your destination
- You might want to steer clear of going to cities where there is significant air pollution. According to Cancer Research UK, environmental tobacco smoke, ionising radiation, air pollution and diesel engine exhaust cause lung cancer’.
- It is always a good idea to check whether the country you are visiting has any restrictions in place on the drugs you are using. Particularly if you are taking strong painkillers, you should check whether you need a licence to take them abroad.
- Travel agents may be able to discuss practical issues, such as the distance between your hotel’s front of house and the room, and can suggest hotels that are on level ground.
Speak to your doctor and airline
- Before flying, discuss with them whether you are fit enough to do so. Due to changes in cabin pressure the amount of oxygen available is reduced at high altitudes. Any reduction in the ability to oxygenate the blood can further escalate poor lung performance. Your doctor may advise you to carry an additional oxygen tank on board. If so, you will need to speak to the airline before you book your flights to see if they will allow it.
- If your doctor has prescribed you inhalers. Check with your airline if you can carry them in your hand luggage.
- If your mobility is restricted, seek assistance from your airline to help you get from check-in to the gate.
- If you’ve had chemotherapy and radiotherapy it can leave you feeling fatigued, so seek your doctor’s advice on how to manage this on holiday.
- After having radiotherapy, your skin may be more sensitive to the sun. Be careful of direct sunlight when in hot countries. Ask your doctor that you are not at risk of any region-specific disease before booking your trip. You may be at a greater risk of infection when taking certain cancer drugs.

He had been clear for almost a year, but finding cover was not that easy. When I initially contacted AllClear I completed an on line questionnaire, but then followed this up with a call to make sure I had everything right before buying. There was one query, which they needed to look into and returned with an answered as promised within less than 48 hours. Travel insurance costs a lot more once cancer rears its ugly head, but AllClear’s quote was really good compared to the others and covered everything we needed. The person who assisted me with my query was the person who called me back – she said she would. I liked that; it was a personal touch that made a difference. Barbara – Trustpilot.
