Travel Insurance for asthma is essential for your trip. Temperature, pollution or allergens can all trigger your condition while you’re away. Make sure you’re covered for emergency medical expenses, stolen medication and more.

Specialist Travel Insurance for asthma

If you’re looking for Travel Insurance for asthma, you may have been turned down in the past. As a specialist Medical Travel Insurance provider, we cover over 1,300 conditions. This includes asthma, as long as you declare it during the medical screening process. What’s more, 98% of our customers rate us as ‘Excellent’ or ‘Great’²

Why do people with asthma need travel insurance?

It’s important to get Travel Insurance for asthma for your holiday. Going away with asthma can cause your condition to flare up. Meaning you could face high emergency medical costs:

  • Different temperatures can trigger asthma symptoms. Asthma & Lung UK says: “1 in 3 people told us that hot weather made their symptoms worse”. While the organisation found that 7 in 10 people reported cold air causing issues
  • There are many other things that can cause asthma complications on holiday. Asthma & Lung UK lists pollution, altitude and pollen as known triggers, as well as “things like cigarette smoke, pets or dust mites” in your accommodation
  • While the NHS states: “exposure to allergens and viral infections in confined spaces, such as planes and ships, may make your condition worse”

With AllClear Asthma Travel Insurance, you can travel with peace of mind, knowing you’re covered if something goes wrong. Asthma Travel Insurance will mean you won’t face high bills from your own pocket, such as costs for emergency treatment or replacing lost or stolen medication and aids. Or if you have to cancel or cut your holiday short due to your asthma³.

Will asthma be covered by standard Travel Insurance?

While 7.2 million people live with asthma, it will not be covered as standard by most providers. And some may not offer Travel Insurance for people with asthma at all.

The NHS advises that you must: “Take out Travel Insurance and check that it will cover your asthma.” So how do you make sure you’re covered while you’re away? As a Medical Travel Insurance provider, we offer specialist policies to those with asthma. All you need to do is declare your condition and complete some simple questions during our medical screening process. We offer up to unlimited cover for emergency medical expenses and repatriation.

Always read the Policy Wording before buying Asthma Travel Insurance.

Frequently asked questions on Asthma Travel Insurance

Do you need to declare your asthma, even if it’s mild?

Yes, you must always declare your asthma for Travel Insurance. If you don’t, you won’t be covered for any related claims you need to make.

Our simple medical screening process will mean we can determine your premium, which is based on how likely you are to need to make a claim. If you have well-controlled, mild asthma and haven’t been hospitalised with it recently, your premium will likely be lower, depending on whether you have any other pre-existing medical conditions.

How is asthma categorised for Travel Insurance?

Asthma is a pre-existing medical condition and must be declared. Our Medical Warranty defines a pre-existing condition as follows.

You must disclose to us if you or anyone else insured on the policy has:

  • In the last two years, taken any prescribed medication or received medical treatment or advice at a hospital, clinic, GP surgery or via a remote consultation;
  • Received or been offered palliative care;
  • Been placed on a waiting list that could cause you to cancel or curtail your trip;
  • Been advised of a terminal illness.

If you do not declare any pre-existing medical conditions. Your Asthma Holiday Insurance will not be valid.

Does the GHIC cover asthma-related treatments?

If you’re in a country that accepts the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), you will get some emergency state medical care, including that related to your asthma. This may be free or at the same price offered to locals.

Asthma & Lung UK say: “You should always get Travel Insurance if you’re travelling abroad, even if you have a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC)”. This is because the GHIC does not cover all medical care or repatriation. It also doesn’t cover the cost of your medication or aids being lost or stolen. Or if you have to cancel¹¹ due to your asthma.

You should always buy Travel Insurance for asthma, as well as taking your GHIC.

Can you fly with asthma?

Always speak to your doctor or nurse before travelling with asthma. They can advise you on whether you can travel, as well as any precautions you should take, such as in-flight oxygen.

Asthma & Lung UK say: “Most people with a lung condition can travel safely on planes, but you should talk to your doctor before you make any plans.”

You should also discuss any requirements with your airline beforehand, as well as having Asthma Holiday Insurance.

How much does Asthma Travel Insurance cost?

The cost of Travel Insurance for asthma will depend on various factors. These include your age, where you’re going, and how long for. It will also be impacted by the severity of your condition. If you wish to add anyone else to the policy or purchase add-on cover for gadgets or activities, the price will be higher.

Get a quote now online or call our friendly team for free.
