What is Annual Travel Insurance?

Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance is a type of policy ideal for frequent travellers who take two or more trips a year. Instead of buying Single Trip Travel Insurance for each holiday, multi-trip insurance will cover all your trips for twelve months.

Over 80%3 of holidaymakers intend to get away more than twice in the next year. If you’re among them, annual cover will protect as many trips as you want, and you could save money and time by not needing to arrange multiple policies.

Advantages of Annual Multi-Trip Cover

There are lots of reasons to choose Multi-trip Insurance if you’re taking more than one trip in the next twelve months. These include:

  • Convenience – Be covered for all your getaways under the same annual policy, rather than having to get a new holiday insurance quote each time you go away
  • Save money – If you’re taking multiple trips, you may find Annual Travel Insurance cheaper than buying a new policy every time
  • Continuous coverYou can renew your Annual Multi-trip Insurance each year, making sure you have the same comprehensive cover no matter how many holidays you have planned.

Looking for an Annual Policy?

More than 8 in 10 (80.7%3) of those we surveyed plan to take two or more holidays this yearNearly half (47.6%3) hope to have three or more trips.

Annual Multi-trip Insurance may be a more cost-effective option if you plan to take several trips in a year. According to independent research by the Evening Standard, the more you travel every year, the better value an annual policy can be.

With Yearly Travel Insurance, you only need to complete the medical screening process once, and you can easily renew for the following year. You’ll then have 12 months of hassle-free travel.

What if you have a pre-existing medical condition?

As a specialist Medical Travel Insurance provider, our Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance covers all pre-existing medical conditions. So far, we’ve covered over 1,300 different conditions, and we can help cover yours too.

You must declare all pre-existing medical conditions. This includes any health problems you have taken medication for or received a diagnosis for during the last five years.

Some examples of pre-existing medical conditions we’ve covered are:

What does an Annual Travel Insurance policy cover?

Our Annual cover provides a wide range of benefits.

  • What’s covered?

    • Emergency medical expenses – This includes the costs of tests, medications and procedures needed to treat an illness or injury. You’ll also be covered for repatriation to bring you safely back to the UK.
    • Cancellation and curtailment – Cover for your flight and accommodation costs if you unexpectedly have to cancel before you go, or need to return home early following an emergency.

    • Your baggage – Protection against the cost of stolen, damaged or lost luggage and personal possessions. You can also choose to add extra cover for gadgets to your policy.

    • Travel delays and missed departure – If your flight is delayed, we’ll compensate you for the time. You’ll also be covered for accommodation and transport costs if you miss your flight.

    • Personal liability – Cover for your legal expenses and any liability due if you accidentally injure someone or damage their property while you’re away on holiday.
  • What’s excluded

    • Your Annual Travel Insurance won’t cover you to travel outside your chosen region, although you can contact us to upgrade your policy at any time. There is also no cover for travelling to a region where the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has advised again all or all but essential travel.

    • While it doesn’t matter how many holidays you take each year, there is a maximum trip duration for each one, depending on which annual policy you choose. Check the policy documents for more information.

    • We only provide medical cover for medical emergencies where you have declared your pre-existing conditions and paid any additional premium needed to cover them.

    • For most claims there will be a travel insurance excess – the first part of any claim, which won’t be covered.

We also have a range of additional cover you can add to your Annual Travel Insurance policy, including cover for cruises, natural disasters, and gadget cover.

How much is Annual Travel Insurance?

The price of annual multi-trip policies depends on a number of factors, including:

  • Your age – Unfortunately, as you age, the cost of your cover goes up. This is because older people are more likely to make a claim. It’s similar to how younger drivers tend to have more expensive car insurance, because they present a bigger risk to insurers.

  • Where you are travelling – The cost of medical treatment varies around the world, and this is reflected in the price of annual policies. For example, a visit to hospital in the USA will be more expensive than in France, so worldwide policies usually cost more.

  • Any pre-existing conditions – The price of your policy will depend on the medical conditions you declare. Some conditions are more likely to lead to a claim, or to higher cost claims. Even if they increase the price, it’s important to always declare any pre-existing conditions.

  • The cover level you choose – We offer a range of policies with different cover levels to suit your trip. The less cover you need, the cheaper your Annual Travel Insurance will be. Just be sure to choose a policy with enough cover that you’ll get your money back if something happens.

Letitia Smith

“Annual Travel Insurance could be just what you need if you go abroad regularly. If you travel more than once a year, an annual policy can save you time and money compared to buying separate cover for each trip. As well as offering unlimited trips to your chosen region for a whole year, policies include all the benefits of Single Trip Travel Insurance, such as cancellation cover, protection for your personal possessions, and cover for travel delays or personal liability.”

What optional extras can you add to your Annual Travel Insurance?

Our Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance policies allow you to add additional cover to suit your specific needs. With us, you can design your policy to suit the type of holiday you enjoy. Here are some of the optional extras available.

  • Natural Disaster – Offers you cover for unforeseen events such as weather disruption.

  • Gadget Cover – Provides financial protection should you damage or lose your electronic devices.

  • Travel Companion – This cover protects your travelling party against holiday cancellations due to your medical conditions if they’ve used different insurance providers.

  • Golf Cover – Protects your golf equipment and other aspects of your golf holiday.

  • Cruise Cover – This is essential protection if you’re planning a cruise, you won’t be covered without it. Cruise cover and be added to Gold Plus policies or is automatically included in Platinum policies.

  • Winter Sports Cover – If you’re aged 65 or under, winter sports cover will protect you for up to 17 days on the slopes.

GHIC cover and Annual Travel Insurance

If you’re going away this year to a destination in Europe, you will need a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which has now replaced the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). The card can reduce the cost of medical emergencies, however, it is not a substitute for Annual Travel Insurance.

You can face financial loss if you choose to travel without Travel Insurance. The GHIC covers emergency medical treatment on the same basis as a resident of the country you’re in. However, the Global Health Insurance Card scheme does not cover other costs or repatriation. Without repatriation cover, you would have to pay air ambulance costs upfront should you need to be medically transported back to the UK

Typical prices back to the UK from Europe:

Repatriation costs worldwide are far more expensive.

  • USA to UK air ambulance – £50,000

  • Caribbean to UK air ambulance – £60,000

  • South America to UK air ambulance – £70,000

Frequently asked questions for Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance

Is it better to get Yearly Travel Insurance?

Depending on how many trips you take each year, an annual policy can work out cheaper and will save you the hassle of arranging Single Trip Insurance each time you travel.

Can I get 1 year travel insurance?

Annual Travel Insurance lasts for a whole year, and will cover trips up to the maximum duration shown on your travel documents. If you’ll be travelling for longer than this, a Single Trip policy can cover holidays of up to 365 days.

How much is holiday insurance for a year?

Several factors contribute to the cost of Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance, including;

  • Your age

  • Medical conditions

  • Region of cover

It’s based on the individual and their travel plans, so will differ from person to person.

When should you buy your Annual Multi-trip Policy?

Martin Lewis has some great advice. He urges people to buy travel cover as soon as possible as “so many of the things you can claim for can happen before you go on holiday”.

The start date of your Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance policy will be the date your cover begins. This offers you protection leading up to any trip you take and between each trip you take.

Why can Annual Travel Insurance be better value than a single trip?

If you are going on several holidays, an Annual Travel Insurance policy could be of better value. Independent consumer researcher, Which? looked at various providers and various numbers of trips. They discovered just two or more trips made Annual Multi-trip Travel Insurance better value for money in most cases.

How does Annual Travel Insurance work?

With an Annual Multi-trip policy, you only need to select your preferred cover region, not every country you plan to visit. You’ll then be covered for any trip you take to the region throughout a 12 month period.

However, there are restrictions on the length of time you can be away for any one trip.

Can you get Annual Insurance for a group trip?

Our annual cover is available for groups of up to 10 people. You don’t have to all go on holiday together – any adult named on the policy can travel independently, as many times as they like throughout the year.

When does an Annual Policy start?

You can choose the start date of your Annual Travel Insurance, up to 60 days from the date of purchase. However, you should be aware that there will be no cancellation cover for your trip until the policy begins, so if you want to be fully covered it’s best to start the policy as soon as you’ve booked your holiday.

Do you need extra cover for sports and activities?

AllClear policies provide cover for most holiday sports and activities as standard – from hiking and cycling to scuba diving and camel riding. Please check the policy documents for the full list.
