Comprehensive cover when travelling to Corfu

Corfu is an exquisite island; with both ancient and modern cultural treasures. It’s home to Greece’s first modern theatre and opera, splendid beaches and beautiful mountain villages.

We hope that you have an amazing time visiting the island and remain safe while travelling.

What should a Travel Insurance policy for Corfu cover?

When making your choice, look for high-quality cover that includes the following:

Emergency medical expenses – protecting you against unforeseen circumstances while you’re away. To make sure you’re fully covered, you must declare all pre-existing medical conditions.

Repatriation to the UK – offering you medical transport back to the UK. This is not covered under any other scheme such as GHIC

Cancellation and curtailment – cover for cancellation or cutting short your holiday.

Baggage and personal property – covering your personal property should they get lost, damaged or stolen while you’re away.

Do you still need travel insurance when travelling to Europe if you have a GHIC?

You may have thought that you can rely solely on your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) for any emergency medical claims. This is not the case. Without comprehensive medical travel insurance, you could be left with large, unexpected medical bills. This is because a GHIC card does not provide cover for all circumstances, such as repatriation costs.

The GHIC card will replace your current EHIC card once it has expired. To request a GHIC online, visit the official website.

Greek wildfires 2023 FAQ

What if you have a medical emergency relating to the wildfires?

If you’re injured or fall ill due to a wildfire or heatwave, your policy will cover you in the normal way, per policy terms and conditions. You would not be covered if you have visited an area against FCDO advice.

Can you choose not to travel?

The main purpose of Travel Insurance is to cover the costs of emergency medical treatment or repatriation if the worst happens. These costs can easily run into hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Travel Insurance can cover you if you need to cancel or cut short your holiday, but this is only under particular circumstances, not because of a disinclination to travel.

You could be covered for cancellation if you are in receipt of a signed medical exemption certificate from a medical practitioner advising you not to travel as you are deemed to be a significant risk due to your existing medical conditions.  In the event of making a claim for cancellation in these circumstances, each case will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

You cannot claim under your policy if you personally decide not to travel because you are worried about wildfires.

Travel Insurance can cover you if advice from the FCDO changes after you’ve booked your trip or purchased your policy and it’s no longer considered safe to travel to the destination.

If the FCDO advise against travel to a destination as a result of a wildfire, and you choose to travel against this advice, there is no cover under any section of your AllClear policy.

What if your flight or accommodation is cancelled?

If your flight or accommodation is cancelled, you should first speak to your airline, accommodation provider or tour operator to seek refunds or replacement flights. Any bookings made through a credit card may also have recoverable costs. If your policy includes travel disruption, you are covered if you have to cut short or cancel your holiday due to the ongoing wildfires.

What to do if your holiday has been cancelled or cut short

You will need to contact your holiday provider in the first instance. If they cannot provide a refund or alternative accommodation/flights, and you cannot recover your costs elsewhere, you may need to log a claim with your travel insurance provider.

If you are an AllClear policy holder you will need to have travel disruption cover in place. If you wish to return home earlier than planned, you will need approval from our 24h emergency assistance team in order for claims to be considered. Claims for cancellation will be considered if the FCDO advice changes and they advise to not travel to the affected country.

What sort of Travel Insurance policy do you need to protect you against these type of events in the future?

In order to ensure you are covered for events such as wildfires, you would need a policy which includes our optional travel disruption cover. This can be added to any AllClear Travel Insurance policy and includes up to £1,000 for delayed or missed departure and accommodation expenses. You would be covered:

  1. If you arrive at your destination and are unable to use your original accommodation, you would be covered to book alternative accommodation
  2. If your flight is diverted and you end up in a different destination, you would be covered to book alternative accommodation
  3. If your flight is cancelled or delayed, you can book extra accommodation

If your flight is delayed due to the wildfires for over 12 hours, we can consider claims for you abandoning your trip. For this cover to apply, the fires would need to be an unknown event at the time of you purchasing the policy or booking the trip. For more information please see our Greek wildfire guide.
