Over 65s travel insurance cover for pre-existing medical conditions

When buying over 65s travel insurance, it’s important to declare all pre-existing medical conditions. This includes any illness or injury you’ve had treatments, surgery, symptoms, medical appointments or investigations for in the last five years.

We understand everyone’s medical history is different. At AllClear, we consider all pre-existing medical conditions as we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to travel.

Examples of pre-existing medical conditions include:

What should a Travel Insurance policy for over 65s cover?

When you’re aged 65 or over, you want to be sure you have the right level of cover in place. When searching the market, look for high-quality cover that includes:

Emergency medical expenses – the unexpected can happen, even when you’re enjoying a holiday. Emergency medical expenses can protect you against unforeseen circumstances. Make sure you declare all pre-existing medical conditions to ensure your policy remains valid.

Repatriation to the UK – As this is not covered under any other scheme such as GHIC, it’s recommended that you get cover for medical transport back to the UK.

Cancellation and curtailment – with this included in the policy you choose, you’ll be able to make a claim for irrecoverable losses due to cancellation or cutting short your holiday.

Baggage and personal property – damage or loss of personal property can be both upsetting and expensive. Look for a policy that will cover your belongings while you’re away.

Will you be covered if you’re travelling during the COVID-19 pandemic?

There are three things to check so that you can make sure you're covered:

  • You must be fit to travel
  • The FCDO must NOT have advised against travel to your destination - check the FCDO travel advice
  • You must follow the local government advice for your destination, checking and following their guidelines and entry requirements

You can then be covered for emergency medical expenses and cancellation for a positive diagnosis of COVID-19, with AllClear travel insurance with enhanced Coronavirus cover. Existing policyholders should read our Frequently Asked Questions if your trip is affected by Covid-19.

Frequently asked questions

Should you still get travel insurance for over 65s if you have a GHIC card?

If you’re travelling to destinations within Europe, it may be helpful to have a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). To request a GHIC online, visit the official website.

Although the GHIC can cover various levels of emergency medical care, it is not a replacement or substitute for travel insurance. To avoid large, unexpected medical bills – you’ll need comprehensive travel insurance as a GHIC  does not provide cover for all circumstances.

When should you take out travel insurance for over 65s?

It’s always best to take out cover from the moment you book your holiday, as this will help protect you against cancellations.

However, if you’ve already booked your trip, you can still buy travel insurance up until the day you leave.

As part of your holiday preparation process, we recommend :

  • Visiting the FCDO website to prepare for entry requirements.
  • Checking the ‘Traffic Light Systemfor quarantine requirements on return to the UK.
  • Buying quality travel insurance that includes enhanced COVID-19 cover.

Where can you travel to with AllClear over 65’s Travel Insurance?

As long as the FCDO  is not currently advising against travel, we can provide you with specialist holiday insurance  to destinations all over the world. However, due to Covid, countries have various entry requirements when it comes to welcoming back tourists, so remember to keep up with the latest travel information.
