Tips on travelling with pre-existing illness
Medication
If you take medication to treat your illness you’ll want to see your doctor before you travel to ensure they can prescribe you enough to last you your trip plus some extras in case of delays. Speak to your airline if you know you’ll need your medication during your flight as some airlines rules state that medication should be stored in the hold.
Flying
Depending on your illness, choose a destination with a flight length which won’t overexert you or spoil your holiday. Priority boarding and aisle seats could benefit you depending on your illness.
EHIC
If you’re travelling within Europe, you’ll be entitled to an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). This will offer the same level of medical care as the residents of the country you’re visiting which could mean lower costs or even free treatment. This isn’t however a valid form of medical travel insurance and wouldn’t cover repatriation or cancellation costs so it’s vital to take out a separate policy alongside this.
While you’re away
While on holiday it’s important to take the same precautions regarding your illness as you would do at home. This may be healthy eating, some gentle exercise or resting regularly, it’s important not to overexert yourself as this could end up completely ruining your trip. Mix your days up and listen to your body, if you’ve been sightseeing one day, it might be an idea to relax by the pool with a good book the next day, allowing you to take in your surroundings from one sunny spot.
Staying safe in the sun is an important part of going on holiday, taking regular breaks from the sun and sitting in the shade is recommended for people of all ages and illnesses. Wearing sun cream and staying hydrated will also ensure you stay safe in the sun.
