Why is travel so important?

Every year millions of us pack our suitcases and head overseas to take a trip. Even when money is tight, many of us prioritise travel as one of the last areas we are prepared to cut back on. In our survey, only 33% said they’d take fewer trips due to the cost of living crisis.1

But why is this? Why do we find the need to travel so vital?

It offers a new perspective

Experiencing new cultures isn’t just a perk of travelling, it’s one of the reasons many of us travel in the first place. Every destination we visit has its own history and culture, giving it a unique outlook on the world. We often end up bringing this home with us, along with the souvenirs.

It helps us live in the moment

Travel is fantastic at helping us enjoy the moment rather than thinking about the past or worrying about the future. When you’re amazed by a breathtaking sunset on Santorini or exploring the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, it’s easy to get lost in the moment and focus on the here and now.

Living in the moment is a vital skill to have in life, helping us to avoid unnecessary stress and anxiety.

Travel is great for our mental health

Over the last few years, we’ve become much more aware of the importance of mental health and its effect on our lives. Seeing the world is a fantastic way to help your mental fitness. Travelling lets us experience new things that we might never have had the chance to otherwise. Shaking off our day to day lives is excellent for us mentally, and holidays are perfect for stress-busting and helping us feel more relaxed.

And our physical health too!

It’s not just our mental well-being that improves when we’re on holiday, it can be great for the body too. The nicer weather and new sights, sounds and smells mean we tend to get more exercise on holiday than we do at home. Many countries also have delicious food that might be better for us than what we eat at home.

Now that we know why travel is so important to us, remember to protect your holiday by getting Travel Insurance as soon as you book your trip.
